The Belgian Malinois is an exciting and energetic breed with a high desire to please. It is not a close relative of the GermanShepherd as many mistakenly believe. It is actually one of 4 varieties of the Belgian Shepherd. To learn more about the history of the Belgian Shepherd/Malinois go to ABMC and UBSDA .
The normal, healthy Malinois loves to work. They are constantly looking for a job to do and if not provided with one, will make up their own...usually to the dismay of the owner.
Malinois are devoted and protective of their family and if not handled correctly from puppy hood, can become a liability. They are NOT for everyone and usually NOT for the first time dog owner. Being extremely intelligent and sensitive, they are very good at manipulating owners who don't have an understanding of their behavior. Because of this, many Malinois are turned over to the pound or rescue by the time they are a year old. The tragic fact is many of these dogs are ruined beyond repair and have to be euthanized.
It is a serious commitment to own a Malinois & the decision should not be taken lightly.
If you are the kind of person who is willing to commit time and energy to daily interaction and training of your dog, the Malinois will reward you with a lifetime of devotion and entertainment.
If you love dog sports the Malinois can be successful in many, such as obedience, agility, schutzhund, herding, flyball, weight pull, and sledding.
